Testing Relief for U.S. Nursing Homes
The Quidel Sofia 2 antigen test has grown in popularity since its FDA EUA. It is one of two rapid point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests the U.S. government will distribute to approximately 3,900 nursing homes in COVID-19 hotspot geographic areas, HHS announced recently. The government will prioritize distribution based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) epidemiological hotspot data and facilities whose data indicate an elevated risk for COVID-19 transmission.
Allotments will be determined by the estimated volume of tests needed for the facility to test all staff and residents at least once and enable a pathway to conduct ongoing testing, the HHS stated in an accompanying FAQ.
Testing ‘Quarterback’
Quidel’s Sofia 2 antigen test has other fans, including the Pac-12 Conference. The collegiate athletic conference that operates in the Western United States has partnered with Quidel to place its Sofia 2 testing machine in every Pac-12 athletic facility by the end of September 2020. The Pac-12, which participates in 24 sports at the NCAA Division I level, canceled all athletic events through 2020. And while that decision still holds, Pac-12 officials expressed optimism over the availability of rapid COVID-19 test results as it looks ahead to winter sports.
