On Friday November 13th the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) issued a health alert for people who may have eaten at a McDonalds on Route 414 and Mound Road in Waterloo NY. There has been a confirmed case of acute Hepatitis A in one of the workers at the restaurant, and as a result they may have exposed their fellow workers, as well as McDonald’s customers, to the disease.
People who have eaten at the Waterloo NY McDonald’s may have been exposed to Hepatitis A on the following dates: Thursday 10/29, Saturday 10/31, Monday 11/2, Tuesday 11/3, Thursday 11/5, Friday 11/6, and Sunday 11/8.
NYSDOH urges anyone without a prior Hepatitis A vaccination history, or with no history of infection to get post exposure prophylaxis (PEP). That means that if you haven’t had the disease before or haven’t been vaccinated for it yet, and you‘ve eaten at the Waterloo NY McDonald’s on the above dates, you should contact your health provider or local health department to get PEP administered to you.
To be effective, PEP should be administered within 14 days of exposure, so if you feel you’ve been exposed, please get PEP administered as soon as possible. Keep in mind however, that if you’ve eaten at the above mentioned restaurant and you HAVE HAD the Hepatitis A vaccination, or HAVE HAD Hepatitis A in the past, you are protected from Hepatitis A infection.
